Chasing Paper: A Millennial's Take on the Gig Economy

I haven't driven for rideshare (or a delivery service) in a couple months and have taken a recent break from working to reflect on life and get back into a career track again. Having lived on my own for awhile without a job, in order to maintain independence, I had to do something. But what did I do? How did I survive without having a scheduled job for 2.5 years?

When I first lost my job, I had some money left in my savings account, as well as some remaining checks to receive from the job. While that was all dwindling away, my friends told me I could make a living driving for Uber and Lyft as my new fulltime job. I thought I was doing fine, but I was burning a hole through my wallet and then some. My car needed a lot of repairs and gas cost a pretty penny. Having to full up several times a week and taking away the value from my car, I wasn't aware how much I was spending. After awhile of driving, I also wasn't taking care of myself because I felt the urge to chase paper. By that I mean I was driving myself to exhaustion and driving for unsafe amounts of time to make as much money as possible. I also gained the 60 pounds back I worked so hard to lose. I felt like I was fishing for scraps and not getting anywhere. Rideshare was winning and I was losing...

Eventually, I decided I needed to cut back on driving. The amount of money I lost exceeded the amount I made and I needed to find other ways to make money while excessively job hunting. Job hunting sadly had no use. I would find some jobs I'd take in any respect such as data entry, dog walking, and verifying background checks. Sadly, I took all of those jobs for the money and not for the passion and lost them all pretty quickly. In the interim of many failed jobs, I would take a bunch of day jobs from people I knew (luckily I know a lot of people), doing crazy things such as working a street fair at a friend's Mexican food and ice cream stand, cleaning houses, working merch tables for music shows, hanging posters, delivery driving, helping people move, and much more. I also sold a bunch of my belongings for some spare rent money. Sometimes, a few people, including my parents, would throw me some financial bones, but not really; I did not depend on help from others. It soon hit a point where I needed to drive to a minimum...

Down the road towards the end of my pure gig shindig, I "did not want to drive no more" and needed to find something else to do. While continuing to job hunt and do odd/day jobs, I eventually discovered the world of gig apps. A gig app is a website that runs on a mobile platform (application) where you can look up and pick up day (or multi day) gigs by clicking a button. Some of these apps are Shiftgig, Jobble, and Wonolo. There are also companies (staffing firms) that host day gigs such as Arete. For awhile I was able to survive solely on odd jobs and gigs, but it is quite the unstable and not necessarily sustainable life. I was in a lot of debt, I needed help (I eventually sought help from a social services place) because I was barely getting by, and I was "making too much to receive government assistance". I also couldn't afford insurance or to pay my student loans back (they're in deferment). It was super lame. I'd get thrown a few financial bones here and there, but not really. I'm sure people were sick and tired of hearing about me struggling for so long.

By the end of this stint, I was worn out, unhappy I had no stability, I gained a bunch of weight, I wasn't taking care of myself, and I eventually hit a dead end when the apartment I had got bedbugs. I completed a few endeavors in my field of choice, but most tasks I did were in the $11-15 an hour range, which isn't a ton of money. I eventually had to move back home, but could have continued to make it on my own had it not been for that. My rent was also extremely inexpensive.

Would I recommend this life to other people? Not really unless you were an entrepreneur or did higher paying gigs that didn't send you into debt... But I survived and that's all that matters!

Go the Fuck to Sleep

Go the fuck to sleep, Rebs!
It's 6am.
Why are you still awake?

"I can't sleep", says the mechanism in my brain churning constant creative thoughts...

Aimlessly scrolling through Facebook, I stumble upon the "Rezz" fan page.
I look through her page and find a motivational post about channeling positive energy into creating and envisioning success.

"What do I want to do with my life?" Says the mechanism in my brain wondering why I am where I am, being a waitress and an Uber driver, soul searching for my artistic dreams to come true...

I plowed through a newly downloaded music making program on my phone to figure out what kind of sound I want to project onto the universe.

In a world where people have to hide their true selves in order to fit in, those who wish to defy the unwritten laws of society end up ostracized like aliens from planet whoknowswhere;
They are left behind to flounder around until luck, opportunity, and dedication meet on the same street corner.

In my family, I was taught you were supposed to go to college, get a degree, work a mundane 9-5 job, go home, watch TV, go to bed, repeat.
I gave that life a shot with many embellishments attached and the only places it got me were fired or almost fired...
The only thing I have to show for college at this point is a certificate with my name on it and insurmountable debt.

Every time I try to give my soul to the man, a voice inside my head tells me, "no no no, what the the hell are you doing?"
Rezz indicated she's always been herself in order to climb to the top.

If the point of life is to be happy, why do so many people want to conform just to get by and feel miserable after?
Every time I am myself, I am satisfied and at my best.

I may need to take the unconventional route to success, but will still find it with many positive self affirmations and support from my friends!
Success doesn't have a time limit or a maximum age.

When I see people younger than me realizing their dreams, I have to keep telling myself everyone's path is different and each step forward is a baby step.

The path of the creator isn't for everyone, but if you want it, go for it! The choice is yours!

Go the fuck to sleep, Rebs!
It's 7am.
Why are you still awake?
I chose to follow the yellow brick road!
With time and patience, you may be pleasantly surprised where you end up!

The Nest

I don't need a parent...

The ones who constantly narrate that I need to finish my taxes and not stay up all night instead of asking how my trip to the arcade with my friends was or talking about the state of the world...
You treat me like how a mother bird feeds worms to her young and not let me fly away when the time comes...

I may have had to return to your nest because mine was filled with the plague, but I don't want you to put that or "being my parents" on a pedestal. I didn't choose you like Ash chose Pikachu.
You always look at the sky and see it as grey and look at the glass as half empty, but at least you taught me resilience and fortitude.

I've been hiding behind my lingo wall for so long, but what I want to tell you is that sometimes you need to let the law of polarity run its course, let me land when I want to land, and let me use a few continues as I continue to advance my life!

I am doing my best to finish the race, but at least I'm still running!

The Arrows Way

In 2001, I was introduced to the world of Dance Dance Revolution, DDR for short, a video game in which you are supposed to use your feet to hit 4 arrows: up, down, left, and right, and time your foot stomping with arrows that run to the top of a screen.

My closest childhood friend and his older brother got me into the game when they brought over a plastic pad strapped to a wooden plank to try to mimic the feel of an arcade-style pad. For many years after that in middle school and high school, my twin sister, my childhood friend Kyle, and me would ride our bikes to this place called "Eskape" several times a week to play DDR. After mine and Kyle's friendship died in the middle of high school, I went away to college and played very scarcely for a number of years. In 2014, after gaining a bunch of weight in college, I decided to start avidly playing again and in combination with that, martial arts, running, and proper diet, I lost 60 pounds. Who knew how much a silly game would later impact my life for the better!

Fast forward to pretty much my birthday, February 24, 2018. I was having a very tough time. I had just had a falling out with those I thought were my best friends and was forced to move and had done so three days prior to this day. I was extremely out of shape and hadn't played DDR in a hot minute. I also hadn't gone out in awhile and decided since it was my birthday weekend to go live a little. I knew on Facebook there was a DDR party going on that night and decided to give it a whirl. And it was 25 minutes away from where I was living at the time. This was my first DDR party and went into it hoping for the best.

When I arrived at the party, I didn't know anyone and headed straight towards the DDR machine. I sat down and waited to play. Within a few minutes, a guy named Chris walks up to me and we start talking for awhile. A few minutes later we stepped into the corner room to talk some more. Within a few minutes of conversation, a recent bad memory triggered, along with having an unstable mental state at the time, and I proceeded to lose my marbles and cry for about 90min to this poor guy I just met that night. Thankfully, Chris was a brave warrior and listened to me and consoled me. As soon as I felt better, we played a few rounds of DDR, talked some more, and that night lived happily ever after and continued talking to each other a lot for the most part after that night.

A week later, Chris invited me back to the person's house who hosted the party to play some more DDR. I thought it was just going to be me and Chris alone, but there were a few others there, specifically a certain someone with green hair at the time named Adam. I noticed the super cool hair and the extroverted side of me decided to talk to him. I was sharing my interests and hobbies with Adam and he seemed very interested in what I had to say, specifically that I like recording videos and posting them to YouTube. We exchanged contact information and recorded a video together, but didn't become super close until we went to a couple of anime conventions together. I didn't realize how integral both Chris and Adam would be to my life until I decided to ditch most of my old friends, which opened up the ability for me to become close to new people. They were also both there for me at different points of a very rough living situation.

I had mentioned earlier how I had just moved into a new apartment, but it fell apart very rapidly and I had to move a second time. In May 2018, I found out the apartment I was living in had bedbugs, specifically visible on my bed. My relationship with the people I was living with was also sharply declining. Throughout my time in "shitpartment land" as I coined it, both Chris and Adam were there for me at different points. Whenever I was stressed out or needed a morale boost, Chris was always there for me. He also encouraged me to make wise decisions, like improving my relationship with my parents, ditching my old friends, and taking an overall step back in my life in order to get back on track. As for Adam, he has resparked my hope in what it means to have real friends by being there for me emotionally and allowing me to express my needs. By the time I was ready to get the fuck out of shitpartment land, Adam was ready to go on an epic adventure with me before being the only person to help me move my stuff. He has also given me a safe haven place to get away from those who don't treat me right, have fun, and express my creativity. I've also gotten back on track health wise, drastically improved at DDR, and even found a job in my field of choice after 3 years of trying since I met both Chris and Adam. The three of us call ourselves the "Midwestern Triangle" and I'm excited to see what the future holds for us. I've met plenty of other beautiful souls in the DDR community, but Chris and Adam have been the most noteworthy. Thank you DDR community for helping me get through one of the most difficult parts of my life. I'm onto bigger and better things now.

How can such a niche arcade game create a widespread, loving community? Go get involved in the underground society, put yourself out there, and present yourself with a smile!

Changes

Changes are the new beginnings...

C is for the climax.
When life is heating up with twists and turns
And you realize it's time to make a comeback
You pick yourself up by the horns and realize it's time for something new!
Welcome to the tippy top of the roller coaster's lift hill...

H is for healing.
You're about to shoot down the almost 90 degree drop and feel the adrenaline rush.
There's no turning back now.
To get better is to accept what's happening in the present moment and seek help if needed.
Please take care of yourself!
You are not on this ride alone.

A is for taking aim,
Controlling where the next shots are fired.
The air is what keeps you alive;
Don't forget to breathe!

N is for negating.
Not being negative,
But eliminating wasted people or space from your life.
Sometimes, less is more,
But make sure your glass is half full at all times!

G is for goodbye.
Good game to the haters.
Good game to the ones who think you're too much.
And goodbye to those who don't care!
You are worthy sharing your adventures with those who genuinely want to join in on the fun.
Those people exist in the open spaces you thought were hidden.
The light is closer than you think!

E is for the end.
The end to this old pile of garbage
And hello to a new world and a new beginning.
The starting over shall commence;
Time to embrace it!

March Onward

What did I do to deserve this life?
The answer is nothing...

No substance can mask the pain.
No exercise is helping any gains.
No beautiful day will help the sun stay.

Running away from home to find solace while spending my time alone,
I look to my windowless room for light only to see glow in the dark stars among the paint-chipped ceiling and rusty pipes shleided by neon lights and a colorful tapestry.

What is home?
It shouldn't be a tearful, bad vibe, or hostile space to receive 5 page-long text messages for lifeing instead of cleaning.
I try to clean the mess but the stains won't hide.

Walking inside I smell the foul air and feel the foul play I'm trying to keep at bay...
Outside of home I'm controlled by a green piece of paper that rules the world.
I want to save some for later but someone always seems to take the last slice.

The world shouldn't be limited to be seen from a screen hiding the true colors,
But if I barely have enough pieces of paper to fill my belly, how can I feed my eyes with the colors of the wind?
I'll paint it myself, of course!

But only this poem and these reflections can help me see light again!
What did I do to deserve this life?
The answer is nothing...
I'm just gonna march onward!

Changes Come with Kindness

It has always been my passion to spread love and kindness in this world. I have had a tendency to be too nice, but have never found a reason to cease being kind. When my resources were more abundant, I was always willing to volunteer and help people out whenever I can. Now I'm the one needing the help. I've been in between jobs for quite awhile, driving for Uber and interviewing into the abyss of nothing, and need some stable grounding in my life. As one of my favorite quotes goes, "in order to receive much, you must give much." Karma began coming back in my direction when I needed it most.

From October 2017 until now, a new chapter of my life is being created.

At the time, I was living with two of my dearest friends. When my life started taking a sharp downhill turn, since I sometimes use Facebook as my public diary (only disclosing the basic whereabouts of course), the general population knew something was up in my life. I am a member of a number of nerd communities and one of them, being called the "Belegarth Medieval Combat Society" was the beginning of the outpour of love towards me. About 4 times a year for the last almost 5 years now, I've been able to hit every single major camping trip in Illinois. I was struggling with finances at the time and my checking account was badly overdrawn. My friend Nigel offered to give me a ride and hook me up with all the resources I'd need to have a successful camping trip and decided to go to the event 2 days prior. I returned from my camping trip fresh and ready to try finding a job some more.

At the end of November, one of the places I had located on a "job hunt tour", meaning driving around looking for places nearby my apartment that had "now hiring" signs outside and going inside and applying, randomly called me back and asked me to come in with 3 hours notice. Me being desperate for a job decided to accept said job as a server at a restaurant called Leona's. I walked into Leona's with my head held up high ready to be the best server ever and was ready to start training. Since I usually connect with males more, there was one male server named Chris. We talked whenever we were on shift together and one day in casual conversation, he told me, "if you ever need any "partying goods", let me know". One day, I hit him up, and he wanted me to grab the goodies from his girlfriend, Iris, who also worked at the restaurant. This ended up happening several times, including after I quit the restaurant.

Fast forward to January 2018, one of the days when I went over to Iris's apartment, she mentioned there being a vacancy in her apartment that would be cheaper rent than what I'm paying right now. Two days later, the people I was living with before and me had "the talk", but I was so out of it I had no idea what happened. Four days later, I decided to meet with the rest of the people living there to see if this would be a worthwhile move for me. After we met, I went to go pick up one of the current at the time roomies from work and I told him what I did when we were discussing how our day was. We then talked again and the information from "the talk" was clarified to me while being more in tune.

In an instant, I found out my living situation of two and a third years was changing. I was scared to death, especially because my mental health was failing and I didn't want any new people to see it.

Iris and Chris welcomed me into their lives with open arms and even helped me move. Special thanks to Iris to helping set up the place and making it feel like home for me... and for doing most of the cleaning. I promise I'll help more, don't worry!

Not only did my living situation change, but also in January 2018, I sought help to better my mental health. I also began picking up my hobbies that were lost to lifeing and trying to get my act together. One day while randomly scrolling through Facebook, in one of the other communities I'm in involved in, a "flow art", also known as a style of dance using an LED light prop, called "orbiting" with the prop being called an orbit, someone posted asking for some pointers on "glorbiting", which is using LED light gloves and an LED light orbit together in one act. I decided to comment on the post with my two cents and the original poster messaged me. For whatever reason, we hit it off pretty quickly, even though I was scared to warm up to new people at the time. This lovely fellow named Joey felt like the first real friend I've ever had even though I'm over here in Chicago and he lives in bufu North Carolina. A lot of the times we would talk, it would be about flow arts and orbiting. More of the times we would talk, I would message him at xyz late at night or early in the morning telling him I'm pulling an allnighter driving for Uber while completely losing my mind. Many of these same messages and talks later, I didn't expect anyone to be there for me in this super low state of mind. Each time, aside from talking me down, he would tell me to quit driving for Uber. He would also tell me how much he cared about me and how he was sick of seeing me hurt myself. Two months and hours and hours of phone calls and texts later, not only have my flow art skills increased, but I finally escaped the wrath of Uber after twenty six and a half months. Not only that, but he's saved me in money emergencies and gifted me this super snazzy prop for my recent birthday. He also gifted me with the quote, "if you don't like this world, create a new one!" And with this prop, I will express the newfound confidence and new life I have gained in the past several months. Through all of the changes and adventures, this show is dedicated to spreading love and light and thanking those who have been there for me recently and showering me with unexpected kindness when I needed it most. This is what I have to give back to you! Enjoy!

Usefulness of the Amazon Alexa

One of Amazon's most memorable creations, the Alexa, is breaking barriers and taking control in the voice-activated speaker industry. The biggest consumers? The millennials of course! Millennials and all technology users alike appreciate the Alexa because of it's use of artificial intelligence in supporting functions such as ordering food, playing music, being used as a hub to host meetings for business, and much more. In households, Alexa is helpful because it automates certain features of daily life, such as using the voice command "Alexa, goodnight", which turns off the lights, locks the doors, and lowers the thermostat. For businesses, Alexa is handy for helping people at their desks complete simple tasks such as organize their workday, dial into meetings automatically, check inventory levels, and notify IT when the printer is broken. The Amazon Alexa is making life easier, one command at a time!
