Emergence as a Woman - Being the Only Girl

I've been the only girl in several classes or groups and have decided to share my experiences to inspire women to follow their hearts even in male-dominatd endeavors. Enjoy!

=================================

I’ve been there several times before, especially in my late teens and twenties, but how would you feel if you walked into a classroom or activity and you were the only girl (or close)? In a world where women end up being the minority, underrepresented, or the less recognized demographic (well, if you fully identify as a female like I do), it is more common to see more men than women in most places at one time. Places such as the business world, IT, engineering, math, science, the military, football, etc., are comprised of significantly more males. Would that discourage you to do the activity if you were the only female (or male, if that happened)?

I don’t want to let being a female in a male-dominated world discourage me from following my dreams or pursuing hobbies or endeavors I’m interested in just because I’m going to be the only girl. It was a little nerve-wracking at first, not going to lie, but giving it a chance was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Currently or in the recent past, I have been in a significant (more than 80-90% male-female ratio) minority at work, the IT department at school, karate, and my swordfighting group, Belegarth (especially for combatants like myself). I also am an avid Super Smash Brothers player, Dance Dance Revolution player, metalhead, and giant nerd. I haven’t seen any super talented female Smash or DDR players (especially on Youtube), and most of the metal music concerts I’ve attended had more men than women.

For me, I see gender as still being another person with a different set of hormones, private parts, and fashion styles. From my experiences, being the only girl has led me to being accepted, blending into the environment, and being the same part of the class as a man is. Getting hit on sometimes happens too. No one really sees me as different just because I have long hair and like makeup. No one really treats me different either. Well, maybe I’ll get a phone number or two depending on the age range of whoever I’m around. Regardless, I am still seen as another person in the group or class.
In most cases, I am given the same responsibilities and participate in the same activities as men. I am not ignored in my classes, and sometimes even given a little extra attention to keep me motivated. It may feel a little weird, but after having experienced this so many times, I’m just like “oh... well ok”, and go on with my life. I’m thankful to not be segregated against for being a woman and told to go to the “girl’s only club”, which likely wouldn’t exist. Another thing I am most blessed about is despite my history of being bullied, I do not get picked on or seen as less (intelligent) than men. The only difference I’ve seen in treatment is that in contact sports, men will be respectful of lack of size and be extra polite (in general) out of chivalry’s sake. They won’t go easy on you, but won’t pound you into the ground either, especially if you’re a small person like me. In certain athletic competitions, you may get separated for your gender, but that’s normal. I would not want to spar against a man whose 6’6 and 300 pounds where I’m 5’2 and less than half of their weight… no thank you, I would not like to get hurt! I value my safety, and I’m sure you do too!

Probably the only place I’ve encountered any difficulty is in a very conservative (corporate) workplace. It may be more difficult to emerge as a woman, especially in technology, but thankfully there are women empowerment groups all over the place (inside and outside of work) to join, as well as several worldwide movements to jump on the bandwagon for. Finding a mentor always helps too (or someone to guide you). I have participated and volunteered in several women empowerment activities and I believe they help foster connections among other women; in some of these, I’ve held a mentorship or leadership role and it makes me feel like I’m able to make a difference and inspire other women to be proud to enjoy and flaunt their passions and true selves, as well as finding their greatest potentials. Who cares if you’re going to be the only girl down the road? You have a plethora of support from all over the place! Also, in the IT department in college during my senior year, I was the president of the club. When I was in the department, the director told me there were 91% males, yet I was still the face of the department. No one was like, “oh, you’re a girl”. I was very well respected and able to spread my wings without a problem, while making a difference and showing the world that women can represent themselves and be a powerful driving force in technology (or any other STEM field for that matter).

The main reason I want to discuss this is to encourage women (or those who identify as female) to not feel discouraged by their gender if they find themselves liking things “only men” should like. That would be called a stereotype. It would be like saying boys can’t like playing with dolls or girls can’t like playing with cars. Who cares if it’s a patriarchy! I am proud to be a woman and I don’t care if not many other women share the same interests as me, because they are my interests. Hopefully, women will be more inclined to show their faces in male-dominated activities, but for now, screw stereotypes and “trying to fit in”. No one has to hide just for having interests different than the norm. I like making websites. I like video games. I like contact sports and martial arts. I will continue to have the strength to be my badass self and do me! I hope other women can be aware it’s ok to be the only girl. You are not and will never be alone! There are plenty of other only girls out there. Just be you! That’s the best way to do it!

Questions to ask in Interviews (for Technology)

Do you have any interviews (or IT interviews) coming up soon? If so, asking questions in interviews make it seem like you're interested in the company and the job you're applying for. In not much particular order, here is a nice list of some good questions to ask (if you know any other ones, feel free to comment below):

What types of technologies do most people work with?

Will there be any gaps in being assigned projects and if so, what usually happens during the gap/break period?

How long does each project last for?

Are there opportunities for training, going to conferences, other development opportunities, etc.

Do you guys get involved with the community through philanthropy?

Do you guys get involved with the IT community by being a part of IT networking groups?

Do people generally work on teams more or are they more of individual contributors?

Are there “clubs” (resource councils), such as “the advancing professionals resource council”, Toastmasters, “working families resource council”, etc.?

Are there opportunities for advancement?

Where do you see the company going in terms of technologies in the next 5 years?

Is there a recent graduate onboarding program?

Do you get placed with a mentor or someone who acts similar to a mentor?

How do people generally dress for work?

What is your viewpoint on diversity and inclusion (ex hiring women, people of unique ethnic backgrounds)?

Are team members open to answering lots of questions, especially from newer employees?

How long do people generally stay at the company for?

How does your company strive to be at the top (of its game)?

Is it easy to be open in regards to expressing concerns with other employees and managers?

Is much travel required?

(For a consulting company) is work generally done onsite or do people go over to the client’s location?

What traits does a successful employee possess and what does it take to be successful within this company?

Is there a lot of employee bonding and camaraderie?

Is there someone you work with to help you manage and drive your career?

What happens on a day to day process for a developer?

Do programmers collaborate and/or do pair programming?

How is the office environment setup?

Last Question: What are the next steps in the interview process?

Teachings and Lessons from Failure

I’ve been having quite the eventful past few weeks, and have summarized my recent reflections. I am speaking from experience here. I didn’t get the first, second, or third job I applied for. I failed 2 classes in college. I’ve gotten F’s on exams plenty of times, but still won several scholarships and had a solid GPA. I’ve missed deadlines. I’ve received so many rejection letters for contests and castings I’ve applied for it’s not even funny. We are human and there is no possible way to get accepted to everything and succeed on all the shots you take. Nope, nope, nope! I am currently experiencing a failure in my life right now, and here is what I have to say for myself:

After a very disheartening meeting at work, I was sent a quote this morning which perfectly described my current feelings on life:

Arnold Schwarzenegger once said, "Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength."

Not every battle ends in victory. Not every exam in school earns an A, a B, or even a C. Not every audition will land you the lead role, or even a part at all.

Failure is defined as not meeting a desired or expected goal.

Winning isn’t easy, but the first way to be able to do so is to get the fuck out of bed and tell yourself how glorious of a day you’re going to have. Carry that attitude with you to the finish line, and bam, your chances of success increase just with a positive attitude.

Unfortunately, the path to the finish line isn’t just running across a straight line and whoop, there it is. There’s twists, turns, ups, downs, lefts, rights, and plenty of downs. When you reach a down, you may feel like you’re so far into the ground there’s no way to get up. You lie there, feeling like you’ve reached your pending doom; but lying down isn’t what’s going to drive you forward. The moment you let the light reach your eyes and realize the hole contains a hidden ladder to climb out is the moment you realize you CAN do it. Keep telling yourself you can in the same way the childhood fable characters adapted to struggles, hardship, and adversity, to realize their greatest potentials.

Everybody has moments where they fall short. Everybody has moments when they trip over their shoelaces, or miss a step in a dance, or drop a line, or even make a miscalculation for a major project, present it to the CEO and an audience, and have the entire audience realize your mistake. Failure is a real thing; nobody is perfect. We are human, therefore perfection is the only aspect of life to be deemed impossible.

How do you take failure into your life? Do you let it rule you? Do you let it tell you how much you can’t do xyz? Do you let it tell you the end of the world is approaching? No. You take a deep breath, close your eyes, count to 10, reflect, and keep walking. Giving up, especially without a valiant fight, is your worst enemy, because you only run out of hit points when you die. If you keep walking, you will have as many tries to reach the finish line as your heart desires.

When you fail, think about what caused your result to not turn out as expected, tweak your plan, and try try again. Keep on trying, because success will be achieved as long as you always back yourself up and allow your imagination to tell you a positive result exists. When you fail, don’t just think, “oh, I fucked up”. Instead, ingest this experience and take proper corrective action to learn from your mistakes. Failure isn’t a death sentence. It’s a moment of learning lessons and personal growth and enlightenment. It’s another few paragraphs or even an entire chapter’s worth of juicy content to add to your story.

Society seems to have glorified expectations of what a “successful” person is. You see people already at the top and think they magically appeared there or found an easy route. Nope. They have put in hours of hard work. They have fallen on their ass or fucked up plenty of times. They have been told no enough times to build a tolerance to it.

The definition of success, from General Colin Powell, is that there are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure. When you fail, keep going. Keep on going. You will get there. You have a race to win. You can do it! Everyone believes in you. Now you need to believe in you. Life is yours. Do you want to win?

The Divine Passage Prelude: Revised

Yep, this prelude was about 3+ years old. Time for an overhaul. I also chopped it down from 3 pages to 1 and actually have started writing the first chapter. For now though, here's a much better sounding prelude:

Growing up in an ordinary middle class family from Chicago with two married parents and an identical twin sister named Monica, 25 year-old Maron was trying to find her place in the world through making a difference and inspiring others. Throughout childhood, Maron and Monica participated in the same activities, made the same friends, and were basically attached at the hip. Unfortunately for whatever reason, Maron had been bullied since age 3 in early childhood school; the bullying traveled with her through the beginning of her senior year in college. Trying to keep her mental health afloat with all of the bullying, she started seeing a counselor in third grade. To top it off, Maron’s relationship with her parents was extremely rocky. Searching for solace and happiness, tragedy ended up striking.

Maron was diagnosed with depression at age 12 when her dad was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer, causing her to ponder about a permanent escape. She was also diagnosed with anxiety attributed to a hormone imbalance at age 16 and had infrequent panic attacks. After a slew of begging her parents to transfer schools during freshman year of high school, the failed begging and loneliness drew Maron to pursue writing. Maron and Monica were best friends with Kyle from elementary school through sophomore year of high school until he passed away of a drug overdose; Maron wishes she could have expressed her worry to Kyle before it was too late. This unfortunately caused the depression to grow worse, especially because neither Maron nor Monica had many other friends. Kyle had been a major influence on Maron and Monica, promoting the beauty of web development and prompting them to pursue a technology degree in college. However, Monica had wanted to break free from Maron to establish her own identity and did everything in her power to shove Maron out of the way.

College was quite the rough transition for Maron as well. She had marching band as a starting place to make some friends and establish herself. Marching band was also off to a rough start because the section leaders yelled at Maron prior to the very first scrimmage game, thus, giving Maron a sour taste in her mouth for the remainder of her time in Marching Band. Later during freshman year of college, Maron joined the Sisterhood of the Purple Flower. This group helped Maron find a lot of her code of ethics and helped her find her passion for volunteerism, but she was unfortunately bullied out of that towards the end of her college career.  College classes were a struggle for Maron as she pounded energy drinks and unhealthy snack food to take her through the grind of late night studying and library ventures. The unhealthy eating came with its consequences and Maron ballooned about 60 pounds. Luckily, in an IT class, Maron ended up meeting a man named Mike, who later became her college best friend. By the time junior year of college rolled around, Maron’s mental health continued to decline.

One day, Maron stumbled into the campus Rabbi’s office of Rabbi Brown. After a deep conversation with Rabbi Brown, he told her about the trip of a lifetime, called the “Divine Passage”, where participants travel to Israel for 12 days and explore the Holy land and culture. This would be the first time Maron would begin separating herself from Monica, on January 1, 2020, enabling Maron to finally begin finding her identity. Once college was over, Maron was introduced to a community known as “Destiny’s Reach”. From that point forward, Maron was finally in a safe place where she could be herself. With each day of the Divine Passage trip symbolizing a pivotal point in Maron’s life, Maron was finally able to find happiness, spread joy to others, and inspire others to follow their dreams!

Resilience of the Sword

Another set of lyrics are up and ready to go (finally). This one is basically about if you want to change the world, you need to get up and do something. Enjoy the loveliness! Dreams ARE real!

Welcome to a world that keeps you hungry
Dashing here and there chasing after your dreams
You keep on searching
For the path leading to the gold

Be bold and daring to conduct some experiments
Living for experience
Avoiding being delirious
Looking for the food to fill your muses
Be sure to avoid blowing up the fuses

Who are you?
Do you want to change the world, or set it on fire, or sit and not do a damn thing?
You watch others win the race
And see yourself as a disgrace
Don't let them bring you down!

But make sure to get off your ass
While not roaming with sass
Now get the fuck up and go!

Follow your dreams
You've probably heard that phrase about a million times
But as cheesy as it sounds
You know what you ought to do
Go get it!
Go get it!

If you're stuck in the grind or shuttered to the mundane and the shrine seems like it's light years away,
It's your job to not cry, or run awry and make sure you try.
Now look at the ocean,
And keep your head in motion
To realize how much you're able to pull the sword from the stone...

Welcome to a universe that never stops moving,
Never sleeps,
Never quits,
And even rarely disconnects
If you take a step back you may feel as if you missed everything...

If you feel as if you're absent
Time melts itself away,
But if you try to stay present
You don't want to end up in the desert

If you're doing something you don't want to do,
Don't give up,
Don't give up!

If the only thing in your vision is a big fat endless loop,
Go destroy it,
Go destroy it!

Stay resilient and confident!
You can do it!
Don’t you stop now!
So keep fighting!

Follow your dreams
You've probably heard that phrase about a million times
But as cheesy as it sounds
You know what you ought to do
Go get it!
Go get it!

If you're stuck in the grind or shuttered to the mundane and the shrine seems like it's light years away,
It's your job to not cry, or run awry and make sure you try.
Now look at the ocean,
And keep your head in motion
To realize how much you're able to pull the sword from the stone...

Now look at the ocean,
And keep your head in motion
To realize how much you're able to pull the sword from the stone...

Go push on through the whirlwind, and don’t get bit by the serpent,
But as long as you keep on trudging through the mud
Know that destiny shall let you win
And you’ll get the sword in the stone!

Wake Up

Wake up!
Wake up!
It’s time to get your ass out of bed,
And shine brighter than seeing eye to eye with flames!
You have a destination to reach!

There’s an entire day ahead of you.
You slowly creep from the comforting slumber cloud,
Foot by foot emerges from the cave to the ground,
Wipe those sand-sacked eyes, you sillyface!
You’re going to be late again!

The internal alarm goes off and you jump, and twirl, and dance around your living space,
In the same fashion as Snow White cleaning her apartment with animal cuteness,
Telling yourself, “today, I will conquer the forces of life”
Even if you don’t always feel that way when you walk outside.

You smile at the bus driver, tell him good morning, and take a seat,
Engulfing yourself in online news gossip and the slew of text messages you woke up to.
Your stop approaches and you dance away, waving hello to everyone who exchanges a glance.
It’s almost time to enter success land… or so you think.

Walking in as the new kid in school, with your flowery black and pink dress ensemble, and a neon sign saying “colorful person willing to help, I have joy and smiles to share and a goal to reach, can I join?”, in hopes to make a difference.
She is handed a picture of a maze where the illustrator forgot to add the end symbol, and sent on her way.

The face once filled with pink is now filled with blue,
Proceeding onward to be locked all alone in the confines of a 7x10 grey, thin-walled box for several hours,
You tell yourself, “I can still do this… I can still do this”,
And before you know it,
Your destination has been unlocked.

Towels were about to be thrown into the ring,
But you put up a valiant fight and emerged triumphant.
You let yourself color outside the lines,
With your flowery black and pink dress ensemble,
The joy and smiles,
And the optimism shining through the previously blank walls,
Now painted with color.

Wake up!
Wake up!
Aren’t you glad you got out of bed today?

Rebecca Duxler's Works

Being someone with several passions and lots and lots of content from my creative endeavors I have built up from over the years, here is the page to showcase it all! This way, it could be easier to locate everything I have done for me and for viewers. Enjoy!

NOTE: This page is in progress, but I've been working on it for so long I may as well publish it to motivate myself to finish. At this point, I have posted everything from when I first started blogging (March, 2012) through May of this year (2015). Some of my content is older than 2012, but that's because I started doing anything (period) in late 2005/early 2006 and went from there. Happy creating everyone!

Programming Career Misadventures

As a young twenty something millennial, when you're around this age, it's the perfect time to go soul searching, especially for what you want to do the rest of your life. Some people have their big break sooner than others, but you want to do everything you can to make it your time as well. It's not an easy road to get to the top, and I am not quite there yet. I thought I knew what I wanted to do from an early age, but when I got into my field, I confirmed with myself my heart is somewhere else. I'm not going to give up and want to share my story of how I at least got to where I am now so others can feel like they aren't alone in this. Enjoy!

=================================

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to be happy all the time hand have everyone else around you feel the same? But how do you get yourself into the proper environment away from drama, especially one conducive for following your dream and being able to go soul searching?

For much of my life, I thought I wanted to be a web developer, sit in a desk, and live the life in my safe cushion job. Little did I know, when I entered the workforce, this environment would be much different than I expected, for worse.

When I was about 12 years old, my twin sister and I had created our first website under the direction of our childhood friend, Kyle because him and his older brother taught themselves how to code and became experts. Kyle and Ryan would show my sister and me their newest creations, but wouldn’t exactly explain what they did. Thus, my sister and I went to the library to check out some books on web development and Photoshop. Unfortunately, I felt the progress with understanding the coding was slow and passions lied elsewhere at the time. I was still curious, but not enough to be super serious about it; something felt like it was missing in terms of my passion for programming. Down the road, Kyle helped us create 3 websites, which we basically only know how to make small tweaks and add content. When high school came around, I had wanted to try taking a programming class. Since my math scores were high, it was recommended for me to register for the advanced level. That was a complete mistake; I ended up only passing the class with lots and lots of help from a tutor and having a friend who gave me the answers to the number of assignments I fell behind on and wouldn’t have been able to complete otherwise. After that, I adopted the mindset of “this stinks, let’s see if I do any better in college and wait to take classes then”. That of course also ended up being a horrible idea, but I triumphed anyway.

I ended up studying Web Development (with a business minor) at Illinois State University. When it came for my first programming course, bad luck struck me once again. Programming was much different than I expected it to be and something still felt like it was missing. Not only was my passion not glowing, but my grade in the class went down the toilet due to handwritten coding exams being an awful experience for me, as well as not fully understanding the material. Thanks to my resilience, I took the class again instead of dropping the major, but requested to take it with another professor and earned an A. I had a similar, but worse issue with my first actual web development class, but was stuck taking the class with the same professor and barely passed the second time. Despite the evilness of handwritten programming exams, my overall grade point average was pretty high for the department and enough to be eligible for all scholarships and internships/jobs. I was still excelling in the department nonetheless. I earned several scholarships, eventually ran the club, raised money to send myself and 3 others to a national conference almost singlehandedly, setup a career fair, worked as a TA for one of the professors, did the research symposium and mobile application development contests, and I was basically the face of the IT department my senior year. I was having a lot of success, but the thought of web development being my niche still sat funny with me. I still loved programming, but other hobbies of mine give me more of a spark and enjoyment.

With the job market being rough, I had a goal of landing a (corporate) job before graduation; I achieved that goal about 3 weeks prior to graduating. When I walked into the door at my first big girl job on day 1, everything started as feeling like unicorns and rainbows. I felt successful, on top of the world, and like a champion. A few short months later, after a lot of post-graduation depression, personal issues, and difficulty getting myself up to speed with my workload, the rainbows rapidly faded as I did everything to avoid being jaded. More time elapses at my job and I needed a change in scenery, which later led me to doing an internal transfer to a different team with a more compatible manager. It didn’t take long for the rainbows to fade again. I began realizing how badly I was failing at my job and have been taking action to find and create a positive change for myself. I also became aware that the cubicle life is not my dream either.

Resilience has been my best friend for as long as I can remember. The farther I fall in my career in IT, the more accepting I am of failure. But why would I accept failure? I didn’t lose everything, nor have I lost this fight because I am still going. I haven’t totally fallen on my face, but with failure, I have realized and confirmed with myself that web development isn’t my calling. Failure means to learn a lesson from lack of success and continue to move forward. I may not be following my dreams from sitting in a desk, but sitting in a desk temporarily enables me to have the means to reach my dreams. Dreams exist, and are real, reasonable, advanced thoughts of the desire for achievement which humans heavily crave. Then how the heck am I going to follow my dreams? For now, here I am, standing before you, putting myself out there, and telling you my stories of the craziness that is my life. The more I plug away at that and keep resilience in my heart pocket, I will in due time find the key to unlock my treasure chest and pay it forward in honor of all of those who helped me reach the top with a smile. That’s the true meaning of success!

The Epic Adventures of Kill, Grill, and Chill 2015

Where on earth can you go to find a bunch of nerds dressed in medieval costumes hitting each other with foam weapons, see the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine McParty Bus, a super cool person spending well over a grand on an open bar for almost 200 people, camping, fizzball, fire art, monster characters, random pirate songs and tons of singing, a random mediocre cover band, a bullywog wedding, a lake to go swimming, camaraderie, happiness, a party that puts college parties to shame, and way too many mosquitos for your own good?

Welcome to the world of the Belegarth Medieval Combat Society, a group of open-minded nerds who enjoy beating the snot out of each other with sticks all in good fun.

On August 7-9, 2015, the realm of Dunharrow hosted a weekend event near Kankakee, IL called “Kill, Grill, and Chill”.

After packing at the last minute as usual and getting off of work a little late on Friday night, I headed to the event at eventually o’clock pm to finally meet up with my friends from Iowa who I hadn’t seen in awhile. Thankfully by the time I arrived, the cover band was still playing and I hadn’t missed anything. After I finish getting ready to go wandering around the campgrounds for the night, I am first introduced to the lovely fellow who spent over 1500 dollars to provide an open bar for the entire event population. I created my drink-a-riffic concoction and proceeded to wander some more. I witnessed lots of pirate singing and embarked on several adventures to get myself ready for the main day. Of course, I decided to stay up until 5:15am. Oops!

Five hours of sleep and waking up in my car covered in sweat later, I turned on my battery-powered fans to cool down, and got ready for the day. After a random adventure to a KFC/Taco Bell, I changed into my fighting garb (uniform) and went off to battle.

Once it cooled down and fighting ceased, it was time for fizzball. One episode of debauchery singing of the Star Spangled Banner later, several teams of 3 who created their own baseball bats took the “field”. The opposite team pitched and you had to bust open 3 beer cans and whoever busted their cans into the most pieces wins, in nutshell. If you get an “out” (3 strikes), you have to chug your beer. If you cleanly sheared the top part of the can off, you would win bonus points. No running or bases are a part of this game of craziness. It was super epic and I’d like to give it a shot next time.

After fizzball and a ceremony to let newer fighters into my realm, it was time for feast and wandering into the night. At the pavilion of magicness, another open bar awaited. Even the “mundanes” (regular non-belegarth people at the campground) wanted to join in on the fun. Just outside the pavilion, a fire is roaring, drums and music are played, and a fire hooper and fire breathers perform their arts. The bullywogs, aka the frog people, had a wedding and smashed a watermelon.  After awhile, I decide to wander off with a new Chicago friend I met who just so happened to be the driver of the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine McParty Bus. A bunch of people wandered in and out of this old fixed-up and painted public transit mini bus that looked like a giant van; it had lights and a pretty stellar sound system. Plenty more craziness and singing later, it was time to hope I didn’t acquire west nile virus when going to the bathroom because the mosquitos began to get nasty during the middle of the night. By the end of the night, it was me, a different super tall friend of mine, and three mundanes in the pavilion at 5:30 in the morning. Once they were too tired and wanted to go to bed, I begin to head back to my friend’s tent to crash as I run into two of my Iowa friends driving around the campground. I end up getting in the car with them and chilling until morning.  At that point, I ended up pulling an allnighter. Once everyone packed and split, I ended up going to get food with my Iowa friends and drove home. At least the weather held until cleanup time again. Thank you Kill, Grill, and Chill for being another successful event and to Belegarth for continuing to be a such an accepting and welcoming environment where I could be my colorful and flowery self to be able to spread positivity and joy to all. I’m going to go hibernate in my bed for awhile. DUNHAROOOOOOOOW!!!

Speak Out

In light of a recent sexual assault incident within my home base community, as well as whatever other crap is going around, here is what to do if this ever happens to you:

(Speak Out)
In a world of being trained to keep your mouth shut to everything,
Unless you are going to drop the f bomb several times at someone for no reason,
Speak out of hate or vengeance,
Or just have something insanely nasty to say to someone,
Open up!

Even if your parents rejected all of your attempts to express yourself as a child,
And you were taught to mask your thoughts and opinions out of fear and lack of safety,
To a point where you never learned the ability to stand up for yourself,
Say something anyway, without looking back or holding regrets!

As a woman especially, the culture of sexual violation stigmatizes coming out of the closet.
You don't want to have a giant neon sign flashing "victim" over your head.
Fear surrounds you as you don't want the enemy to retaliate,
Causing a mental blockade
And getting stuck in the shade.

If you have an army behind you, justice shall prevail,
Especially in a supportive, open, and welcoming community!
Any retaliation will be shielded by the army,
While the rest community will scoop you up with open arms.
It's time to be brave!

If you're stuck in a junction of going for the kill to protect others
Versus letting the enemy run loose and cause more casualties,
Go for the kill!
The army will protect you and help to start a movement
To ensure everyone else's safety
And consequences for the villains.
You will be appreciated more than you think for representing the side of justice,
Because bravery always wins,
And evil shall sink into the fire!

Living Your Life

Friday morning philosophies about the meaning of life a la Rebs: what it means to be living your life. Happy Friday, beautiful day everyone! :D

Life: You wake up every day with a goal in mind of how you’re going to better yourself, even if the opportunity to do so isn’t right in front of you. You walk out the door and have a map and destination plotted in your head. You think you’re going to turn one direction and end up having a sudden urge to deviate or an obstacle falls in front of you and you have to walk around it. Your destination can unexpectedly change in an instant, and you have to breathe and keep moving. You slip, you fall, you pout, scream, even fail a few times, and still have the will to get up. The mindset of a champion is engrained in your brain, even though it may take tripping over your shoelaces a few times to learn your lesson. Some battles are victorious and others end in defeat. The finish line is located “somewhere”. While some people think there’s no such thing, some turn around and go home, but no, you will keep looking until you are physically unable to do so anymore. Plenty of people are met along the way. Wisdom is exchanged. Opportunities are lost, found, and created. Stories unfold, recorded, and are later told. You eventually become tired and wonder why it’s taking so long to find the finish line. You feel like you’re running around in circles and stuck in a loop. You feel like you’re about to go crazy and possibly even lose everything; you do everything in your power to stay afloat, even if it means having visions of tossing your computer out  the window. You feel like nothing is happening and are displeased with yourself because you don’t think you’re doing enough, even though you are doing everything in your power and will to reach the top. After taking a few moments to check in with yourself, you wonder what it means to be living your life. Do you want to know how to live your life? Well first, you actually have to wake up, walk out the door, go exploring, get eaten by wolves a few times, and keep attempting the game an indefinite number of times until you reach the goal. Do you want to live your life? Get on the other side of the door and go cross the street. A vast universe is ready for you to paint it! Resilience shall always prevail, because you can win and you will win!
